Michael is a barrister renowned for representing defendants in criminal trials, appeals and inquiries in some of the most controversial legal cases the country has seen, including 77 of the Hillsborough families.

He is President of the Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers, Trustee of the Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights, Patron of Viva (Vegan charity), Rightswatch and The Kaleidoscope Group (mental welfare). He was a Co-Founder of Interights, President of Amicus and President of the National Civil Rights Movement. Last year, in the wake of his daughter’s suicide, together with his partner Yvette Greenway, he launched an initiative Silence of Suicide (SOS).

Alongside his legal work, Michael helped to establish North London’s Jacksons Lane, became founder member of Theatre in the Round in Newcastle under Lyme before it moved to Stoke and maintained a long and close collaboration with Nicholas Kent whilst at the Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn.
