A Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse production
Rita is back in Liverpool.
Willy Russell’s award-winning and inspiring play comes home in a new production directed by Gemma Bodinetz to celebrate its 35th anniversary. An intimate play of big ideas and with a joyful heart, Educating Rita has lost none of its bite.
“Simply a marvellous play, painfully funny and passionately serious: a hilarious social documentary; a fairy tale with a quizzical, half-happy ending.”
The Sunday Times
Now two of Liverpool’s greatest actors join forces.
Leanne Best, one of the finest actresses of her generation, returns to the stage where she made her debut to play the indomitable Rita. Leanne’s many credits for e&P include Unprotected, The Flint Street Nativity, Our Country’s Good and The Match Box, and Gemma’s productions of The Hypochondriac and A Street Car Named Desire.
Con O’Neill, who plays tutor Frank, has a long association with Willy Russell, including his Olivier Award-winning performance in Blood Brothers and his leading role in the film Dancin’ Thru the Dark. The MEN Award-winning actor was once a member of the Everyman Youth Theatre, and last appeared on our stages in 2011’s Dead Heavy Fantastic.
