Art in the Everyman // Megan Dunbar

Mon 23 May to Mon 6 Jun

Megan Dunbar is an Irish artist based in Liverpool, UK. She paints landscapes of meaningful places to her; some realistic and some more like a dreamy memory of an experience she had there. Dunbar likes to think these paintings provoke a sense of nostalgia not just for herself but for anyone who spends time with them. She works mainly with oil paints, painting onto stretched canvas or board.

Her practice is rooted in traditional representation and methods, but she constantly challenges her understanding of “painting” and explores ways paint can represent effects such as light, time, and movement. She uses her brushes, palette knives and sometimes fingers as efficiently as possible, condensing her vision onto canvas, whilst still being sure to leave room for a subjective and capturing experience.

Having grown up in the beautiful, rural town of Enniskillen, Dunbar has always been interested in land, water and townscapes. Growing up surrounded by water, its influence was inescapable. This can be seen in much of Dunbar's work, focusing on the beauty but also the mystery provided by the water.

After graduating her Fine Art Degree in Sheffield, Dunbar moved to a small village outside Cambridge called Orwell. Here, the juxtaposition of sprawling agricultural landscape meeting vast open skies at a clear linear horizon opened her eyes to the drama that can be found in the sky. Thatched cottages and gardens abundant with colour filled her days with beauty and her interest in nature and the landscape grew. It was only through the time for reflection offered by the Covid-19 pandemic that she decided to commit to art full time. She uprooted and moved to Liverpool where she can now be found every day in her studio, surrounded by oil paint and canvas.
