Art in the Everyman // Artists’ in residence exhibition: Alex Corina & Laleh Kamalian

An exhibition of artwork produced over a 6 month artist residency with The Everyman by dot-art Artists.

Mon 3 Oct - Fri 14 Oct

Alex Corina

Alex describes his methodology and progress so far: -“I began with sketchbook studies, photography, and other mixed media experiments, thoroughly exploring behind the scenes, front of house and the street cafe. This exhibition includes many of the characters I’ve met and draws on events at the Everyman.
I really wanted to cover the Everyman in all its aspects and capture the creativity, emotion, and atmosphere of a play. I focused on Cherry Jezabel by Jon Larkin, described as Raw, Rude, and Raucous. I hope I’ve captured some of the colour and energy of the production and have done it justice.”

Alex Corina studied Printmaking at Bradford Regional College of Art. Creative Art has been important to Alex throughout his working life. Drawing and painting at every opportunity kept him in touch with what he really wanted to do, until he went full time as an artist 20 years ago.

Alex is best known for the Mona Lennon the image used to brand and promote Liverpool's successful bid to become European Capital of Culture 2008. Alex has exhibited in Liverpool, London, Leeds, Stoke, Bradford and sold his work worldwide.

Laleh Kamalian

Laleh Kamalian is a self-taught artist who found art at a late stage of her life after a long career in medicine and science. Her favourite subject is human portrait, where she aims to show the characteristics and emotions of the portrayed to the best of her ability. However, she enjoys describing the nature beauties in the form of flowers, scenery, or wildlife with her art too.

She is a member of dot-art Liverpool, Wirral Art Society, the International Guild of realism, Portrait Society of America as well as colour pencil societies of the UK and the USA.

The “Light and Shadow” portrait series in this exhibition are studies of striking character traits and strong emotions in extreme light and shadow. Working from modelled photographs, Kamlian focuses the composition on character or emotion she aims to depict in the portrait. All the portraits in this series include some sort of simple yet unique drapery, which is another favourite subject of the artist.

The four portraits exhibited here were produced during the last six-month while the artist worked as the resident artist in the Everyman Theatre, two of which inspired by the wonderful people she met during this time.
