Spirits of the Stone

Fri 17 Apr to Sat 18 Apr 2009

Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse and Knowsley Arts and Heritage Service present a Kirkby Community Production Spirits of the Stone by Laurence Wilson.

It’s time to unite.

Long ago, an ancient Viking artefact was buried in the ground to banish an evil curse.  When Johnny Glover accidently uncovers it, an Unholy Trinity of Kirkby’s urban myths seize their chance to return to the town and wreak havoc on its inhabitants.  Can the people of Kirkby unite to banish these dark spirits of destruction or will they see all that they love descend into chaos?

Follow three generations of the Glover family on a rollercoaster adventure that whirls us from the Liverpool blitz and into the modern days of a strong community who stand tall and proud and ready for anything. But those who come must beware, for the Grey Lady of St Chads, Fishcake Harry and the Man with the Square Head, are looking for a new apprentice. Let’s hope it’s not you!

Through the work of the Everyman & Playhouse Theatre and Community department together with Knowsley Arts and Heritage Service, Liverpool playwright Laurence Wilson and director Gav Cross led reminiscence sessions in Kirkby last autumn working with a range of individuals and groups including Sea Cadets, Mums and Tots, Elders and Wardens to research stories for the play.  They even planted themselves on a sofa chair in the town centre to collect Kirkby tales from passers by!
