Amélie & Little Miss Sunshine to visit the Playhouse

We’re delighted to announce two more musicals – Amélie and Little Miss Sunshine – will be a part of our new season of work at the Playhouse. The two major stage adaptations of cult classic films join Miracle on 34th Street: The Musical in our Autumn/Winter 2019 season, with more shows still to be announced.

Little Miss Sunshine is at the Playhouse, Tue 24 Sep to Sat 28 Sep 2019.

Little Miss Sunshine is based on the 2006 Oscar-winning film and will visit the Playhouse for five nights (24-28 September). The production is adapted for the stage by Tony Award-winners James Lapine and William Finn. Liverpool actor Mark Moraghan (Eric’s) will play the role of Grandpa.

Amélie is at the Playhouse, Mon 14 Oct to Sat 19 Oct 2019.

Amélie is based on the striking and critically-acclaimed film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and will visit the Playhouse for six nights (14-19 October). Making a welcome return to Liverpool is musical director George Francis, alongside choreographer Tom Jackson Greaves. The pair worked as Musical Director and Choreographer as part of The Everyman Company 2017 and 2018.

Both productions are brought to the Playhouse by Selladoor. The worldwide production company started life in Liverpool, when co-directors David Hutchinson and Phillip Rowntree first met on an acting course at Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA).

Our Artistic Director, Gemma Bodinetz said: “Our audiences have loved musical productions from Fiddler on the Roof to our current critically acclaimed production of Sweeney Todd. We are thrilled to announce that next season we will be bringing them two new additions to the musical theatre canon.

Amélie is a magical theatrical incarnation of a film that captured the hearts of a generation. We’re particularly thrilled to see it features the talents of former Everyman Company creatives George Francis and Tom Jackson Greaves.

Little Miss Sunshine also takes a much-loved and hilarious film as its inspiration. Featuring one of Liverpool’s best known actors Mark Moraghan, we are sure this will delight both those familiar with the film and those discovering the story for the first time.

“It gives me great pleasure to be working with Selladoor to bring both of these productions to the Playhouse. Starting life at LIPA, they truly are a success story of Liverpool theatre.”
