Lights Out at the everyman to remember Alan Dossor

The inimitable and inspirational Alan Dossor, Artistic Director of the Everyman from 1970 to 1975, passed away on Saturday 6 August.

The legacy of the work he made and great actors he discovered and nurtured will burn brightly for generations to come.

He was a unique and generous spirit and those of us fortunate to stand upon his shoulders will be forever grateful.

We’ll miss his genius, his honesty and his wicked sense of humour.

Our thoughts are with his family right now.

A great man who would never have called himself such.

We’ll miss him.

In line with theatrical tradition, the red Everyman sign will be dark on Monday 8 August to honour him. Subverting this tradition to truly honour him, the ‘A’ will blaze on.

Allan was the Everyman and his legacy will always live on.

Very sad news. Alan was a great guy, with a great head - he was very supportive to so many of us in Television direction too.

Alan gave me my first job in theatre and was an inspirational figure. I have so many memories; mainly of Alan as Mark Anthony scooping up dismembered pigs' ears from the stage which had been hurled at him during a schools matinee after 'Friends, Romans and countrymen ...' - and hurling them back! So sad. RIP.

So sorry to hear Alan has died....I looked after Alan's daughter, Lucy when she was only 2 ... He made me laugh..and maybe he influenced my own love of acting too, indirectly. Thanks Alan

I looked after Alan's daughter Lucy when she was 2 yrs old. He always made me laugh. He was a good guy...and no doubt influenced my own love of acting..Thanks Alan...I won't forget you.

I became a film director, but Alan directed one of the last things I did as an actor - Star Quality - for the BBC. I loved him. He was the kind of director who inspired me to direct, simple as that. I just loved how unpretentious he was. Knew what he wanted and didn't care how others might have achieved it. Great, great guy.
