A football match with rhythm

As well as being the Summer of AfroReggae here in Liverpool it is also the year of Health and Wellbeing so earlier this week, as part of the pre-programme for AfroReggae, the Everyman & Playhouse played football against Vauxhall Young People.
As we all know, young generally means fit so it was an uphill battle from the outset.
We entered the megacentre arena to the sound of rhythmic and inspiring drums pounding that (in some sort of Rocky moment) made us feel energized and optimistic, and we ran around the pitch like men possessed.
The pass and move mantra, and of course the technical ability from us, was akin to Brazil 1970……for about 5 minutes, and then reality set in.
Our opposition, who had no clue about Brazil 1970, may have lacked experience but they more than made up for it in enthusiasm, pace, skill and tenacity. We also discovered after a while that their keeper had been on Man U’s books. It's not his fault. Our hearts sank a little and we felt tired. But still the uplifting drumming continued and if they could go all game raising our spirits then so could we! ….well we tried at least.

The Vauxhall Team
We should have got hammered but luckily the Vauxhall team were caught in the exuberance of youth and tried to out showboat each another. Older and less fit we may have been but with age comes experience and we took advantage of this to escape with an honorable(ish) 8-8 draw. Technically we lost on pens but it was hard to be down with the carnival atmosphere we exited the pitch to.

The Everyman and Playhouse Team
And as for Health and Wellbeing? Well, it was proven that they were healthy and that, even three days after, we were still NOT well beings.
