Playhouse creates “perfect” setting for first ever autism friendly performance

10th January 2012 Cinderella_Sarah Vezmar (c) Robert Day

As a very important part of our on-going commitment to making Theatre for Everyone, the Playhouse held an autism friendly performance of our rock 'n' roll panto Cinderella, on Monday 9 January and created a night to remember for families and theatre staff alike.

The tailor-made performance,  described as a 'relaxed'  performance,  allowed audience members to respond and interact with the show however they felt.  There was a 'chill-out' area and children and families could pop in and out of the show and take time out if they needed to make the evening as enjoyable and relaxed as possible for all involved.  Packs were sent out prior to the performance describing what would be happening scene by scene and Playhouse technical staff adjusted lighting, sound and special effects to suit the audience based on expert advice.

Audience feedback has already been tremendously positive in what was an exciting and fulfilling night for staff and audience members alike.

“We had a fantastic night, the setting for our son was perfect.”

“To be somewhere comfortable to enjoy a great show with an outstanding cast and the understanding and friendliness from the staff was second to none.”

“It gave us the opportunity to do something as a whole family that we all enjoyed, the staff were amazing.”

Actress Sarah Vezmar who plays Cinderella added: “I would do it again anytime, it made my run”.

Before the show six-year-old Joseph Foy was lucky enough to meet Cinderella and Prince Charming on stage which was captured by the Liverpool Echo.

The idea of introducing an autism friendly performance came from the Everyman and Playhouse’s regular meetings with their Access Forum. Members of the forum advise on a range of issues and it was suggested an autism friendly performance would be beneficial to many families and individuals.

The Playhouse also offers regular captioned and sign language performances of in-house productions. The BSL performance of Cinderella is on Saturday 21 January at 2pm, while the captioned performance is at 2pm on Saturday 14 January.
