The Everyman’s acclaimed Everyword festival returns for two weeks of the best in new writing
The Everyman’s annual new writing festival Everyword, which has grown more popular every year, is back and has been extended to two weeks. This year’s programme includes workshops from award-winning writer David Eldridge and one of the finest new writing companies in the UK, Paines Plough. Readings include new work by Robert Farquhar, Laurence Wilson and Kellie Smith. Lime Pictures continue their sponsorship with two days during the festival designated as ‘Lime Days’ that will feature a discussion with Matt Telfer, Development Producer, Lime Pictures as well as a Nabokov Election special featuring celebrated writers Michael McLean and Karen Brown. Everyword will be at the Everyman from Tuesday 18 to Saturday 29 May.
Now in its fifth year Everyword provides the opportunity for writers to push the boundaries through a series of themed events and workshops that will challenge both writers and audiences alike. This year we are pleased to be welcoming back former members of our Young Writers Programme Lizzie Nunnery, Michael McLean and Kellie Smith, along with former collaborators like Jeremy Dyson – fresh from the success of Ghost Stories – and Keith Saha whose production of Ghost Boy received great acclaim on its recent appearance at the Everyman.
Leading new writing company Paines Plough is involved with two major projects during the festival. The company have been working with playwrights from across the UK to write plays about the places they grew up which will be performed by the writers themselves. In this special one-off performance at the Everyman, playwrights from Merseyside come home to tell their tale.
Laurence Wilson (Lost Monsters) is also working with Paines Plough and will present a rehearsed reading of his latest work in progress Tiny Volcanoes, which will also go to the Latitude Festival in July. There will also be rehearsed readings of Dead Heavy Fantastic by Robert Farquhar and The Parrot House by Mwewa Sumbwanyambe.
The ongoing collaboration between Lime Pictures and Everyword continues to grow and the festival this year will have two dedicated ‘Lime Days’. The first sees internationally acclaimed theatre company Nabokov Theatre lay down the gauntlet to the artists of Liverpool for a production entitled A Day That Shook The Nation, challenging the North West's top artistic talent to respond to the most momentous event of 2010 - the May general election.
This project gives musician Gary Daly (China Crisis), and writers Karen Brown (King of Edge Hill), Michael McLean (The Electric Hills), Keith Saha (co-artistic director 20 Stories High) and dancer Elinor Randle (Tmesis) just 14 days to collaboratively create a piece of work using music, animation, puppets and dance that engages with what the election means for the future of our country.
The second ‘Lime Day’ will feature a Q&A session with Matt Telfer, Development Producer of Lime Pictures, who will discuss the often difficult task of getting a TV idea from pitch into production, offering advice on how to succeed despite a difficult market. The day will also feature a workshop, in conjunction with Soho Theatre, led by Nina Steiger. It is then rounded off with a work-in-progress showing of the Everyman and Playhouse’s forthcoming Theatre & Community Tour.
Everyword will also contain a Q&A with writer and director Jeremy Dyson (Ghost Stories, The League of Gentlemen), while Chris Meads, Director of Young Everyman and Playhouse, and Elli Johnson will lead an event called Wish You Were Here which takes its inspirations from holiday photos submitted by the public. There will also be workshops and events with leading writers and theatre practitioners including BBC Writersroom, David Eldridge and Dan Rebellato.
